FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE RECENT HISTORY OF FINLAND

The Finnish Stone Research Foundation has organised a unique exhibition of the period when Finland was an autonomous state. The exhibition is at the Finnish Stone Centre in Juuka. At the Diet of Porvoo in 1809 Finland was raised to the status of a nation among nations. This signified a new phase in the history of Finland. National identity became stronger. The economy took off and exports were in demand, which also opened the market for the stone industry. Finland’s infrastructure started to develop. The Saimaa Canal was built and the rail and road network was extended. The intellectual and industrial development of Karelia, Savo and the rest of rural Finland was given a further boost. The exhibition is interesting from many perspectives. The exhibits have been compiled from museums and private collections on similar themes.

ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION ON FINLAND 200 YEARS AGO
The purpose of the Era of Emperors in Finland exhibition is to explain the history of Finland over the years 1809-1907 when Finland grew and developed from a grand duchy into an independent state. During this time Finland was ruled by five Emperor Grand Dukes. Find out more about them in the vibrant Emperors’ cabinet. You can also find out about a group of great Finnish men and other influential people from that period at the exhibition.

TOWARDS NEW DEVELOPMENT, SHIELDED BY THE WINGS OF THE EMPEROR
The exhibition focuses on Alexander I as his impact on changing the political status of Finland and the development of the nation is undisputable. In the exhibition we follow in the Emperor’s footsteps on his tour of rural Finland from east to the north in 1819. This journey is illustrated with colourful tales, beautiful costumes, and the Emperor’s magnificent souvenirs and church gifts.

FROM DIM CHIMNEYLESS HUTS TO THE ROAD TO WELL-BEING
The exhibition’s other purpose is to tell us about the development which raised the people of Karelia, Kainuu and Savo, who were living in chimneyless huts, to the same status as the rest of the people living Finland, both economically and educationally speaking. Above all, this development prompted the opening of the Saimaa Canal and large investments in the road and rail network. The industrialisation of Finland is also dealt with and the exhibition presents the significant role that the country’s soapstone and mining industry played in the construction of St Petersburg. At the same time, important ship owners and merchant families were settling in Joensuu and Kuopio, which boosted industry.
